MBRIA The landscape is culture and respect for nature An official survey by the University of Kentucky has established Umbria as region of the world in which the quality of life is highest. Umbria, the green heart of Italy, is not a land of large cities but of lovely medieval towns and villages, like the ones which encircle Lake Trasimeno from Città della Pieve to Corciano and those, like Spello, Trevi, Bevagna and Montefalco, which dominate and contemplate the Umbrian plain. But Umbria has more than the Middle Ages to offer. Much earlier, the Etruscans and Romans built important monuments which can now be partly seen and partly understood through the remains housed in the region's museums. Aldo Capitini wrote of the thirteenth century that: "Umbria gave as much as it could. The century began with St. Francis and ended with Jacopone da Todi". In 1472, the first edition of "The Divine Comedy" was printed in Foligno in 300 exemplars. Umbria's much earlier origins are to be found in Orvieto, Perugia, Spoleto, Carsulae and Spello "the most splendid colony" which boats a superlative example of fortified walls with monumental gates decorated with friezes and sculptures. |
